5 Top Tips to Writing a Tasty CV

February 21, 2022

Writing a good CV can be one of the toughest challenges of job hunting. And with so many other candidates out there, how exactly can you get in front of potential employers?

The reality is most employers spend just a few seconds scanning each CV before sticking it in the 'Yes' or 'No' pile. Here are our top 5 tips for writing a CV that'll secure the all-important interview.

1. Tailor it

Quite possibly one of the most common habits we come across as a recruiter, countless CV's and applications, all with a blanket approach. We've all done it at some stage, let's be honest. Stop! We recommend taking the time to change your CV for each role that you apply for, even if it means you apply for half as many. Research the company you're applying to use the job advert to determine what skills you should point out to them. Not only will they appreciate the apparent effort, but it also shows a clear interest in the role and company.

2. Include a personal statement

What's the best way to stand out from the crowd, you may ask yourself? A personal statement is an ideal opportunity to introduce yourself, shout about your experience, and explain why you would be a perfect fit. We recommend referencing this in your cover letter to draw the hiring manager in.

3. Keep it current

There's nothing worse than updating your CV, especially if it hasn't been done for quite some time. Tracing back through emails, vague recollections and 'winging it' make it a lengthier process than it should be. We recommend keeping your CV up to date whether you're looking for a job or not. Every time something significant occurs in your career, record it so you don't forget something that could be important later. You'll thank us later!

4. Tell the truth

Everyone lies on their CV, right? NO! Stop! Blatant lies on your CV can land you in a whole heap of trouble when it comes to employers checking your background and references. The last thing you want is to be caught out, as not only will it be embarrassing at the interview stage, but you'll also most likely lose your perfect role if you were successful. Not having the required qualifications isn't a weakness; it's a reality that the position may not suit you.

5. Make it look good

We live in a world where image is everything, which also goes for your CV. Take some time to pretty it up… Use bullet points, and keep sentences short. Use the graphic design trick of leaving plenty of white space around text and between categories to make the layout easy on the eye.
